Our client is a start-up company who are currently in stealth mode developing their product, which is an innovative, high performance web application that they are sure will be the next big thing. Their team of four are currently based out of their R&D incubation centre in Cambridge, although their ambitions are to go global! The company's founders hail from California's high-tech hub and have an impressive record of high-tech start-ups. With substantial VC funding they are now looking for two or three ambitious Java Developers to bring their product to life.

You will be an ambitious Java Developer who likes the idea of being part of a successful start-up. You will have a strong academic record as well as significant experience of development in Java / J2EE, including tools such as Tomcat, Eclipse and Ant and frameworks such as Hibernate and Spring. You might have some experience in a software company, or you might be fresh from a PhD or MSc. Either way, the important thing is that you have put your Java to good use, developing a tangible product or service of some description.

This is a great opportunity for a talented software engineer who has solid skills in Java-based web services to join a motivated team developing web services and client applications for enterprise applications, along with the associated Oracle back-end.

You will be involved in all aspects of the development of enterprise application components, from inception through requirements gathering, specification, design, development, implementation, testing, and documentation. You will work closely with other team members to meet overall product schedules and quality standards, and you should be capable of independently driving development projects to a successful conclusion.

Besides excellent technical skills, the role calls for enthusiasm, creativity, and the ability to develop high-quality software as part of an outstanding team of scientists, developers and software architects.

In addition to a solid academic record you should be highly competent in the following:

- Developing Java-based web services. Experience with one or more of Struts, Spring, JUnit, Hibernate, and Tomcat would be a strong advantage.

- Successful web application development using JavaScript/AJAX.

This position has to be filled by a talented, assertive, highly-motivated and skilled individual, who will join the world class research and development team in Cambridge and participate in developing the market-leading and award-winning product suite.

The job entails both software development and quality assurance roles, and in some instances might also involve customer-facing consulting. While the normal working base will be in Cambridge, occasionally it might be required to travel to customer sites.

You must be a good all-round developer, willing to learn and adapt to new technologies.

Candidate requirements:
  • the successful individual has to be an over-achiever, diligent, passionate, driven by success, and have what it takes to deliver high quality software
  • have a First Class or Second Class Upper first degree in Computer Science or closely related subject, a Masters or Ph.D. degree is an asset
  • will ideally have, but is not required, 1-2 years of Software Engineering experience
  • must have, and be able to demonstrate, strong development skills in one of Java or C++, with knowledge of the other considered an asset

They are now looking for a software engineer to join their existing team, which is small enough that your contribution will be important and noticed. You will work on web-based software engineering projects, including high-end, server-based, Microsoft .Net applications for corporate intranets and the Web as well as advanced searching, document indexing and data management technologies.

Depending on your level of experience the opportunity exists to join at a junior or senior level. Either way you will be a long-term team member of the team who will be inspired to help the company fulfil its enormous potential and will share in their success. To fulfil this role you will be degree-educated in computer science or engineering (or have equivalent experience).
