Mechanics, Fluids, Thermodynamics

Working within multi-disciplinary project teams, consultants help to address the innovation challenges faced by clients who are global industry leaders in their fields. Consultants will typically work across many industries on a broad range of topics.

You will have a good grounding in wide range of physical principles (e.g. mechanics, fluids, thermodynamics, soft condensed matter), enabling you to get up to speed quickly in new areas, understand unfamiliar phenomena in diverse systems and select appropriate theoretical descriptions. You will be able to use this understanding and theory to generate new insights and make order of magnitude estimates.

Because of the need for the rapid creation of models that drive insight and provide order of magnitude estimates, you will almost exclusively be using equations written with pencil and paper rather than numerical or experimental techniques.

Successful candidates will demonstrate an aptitude in the generation of simple but insightful physical models. Crucially, you must be able to apply these skills quickly to a broad range of unfamiliar problems. Experience in computational and experimental physics may add to a candidate’s breadth, but is less important. You will have skills commensurate with those of a strong postgraduate theoretician, although a PhD is by no means essential.

It is possible that candidates may have a background in applied mathematics rather than physics, although the ability to rapidly bring your thinking to real-world problems would be crucial.

Candidates will have an exceptional academic background, most likely indicated by a first-class degree from a leading university. You will be able to demonstrate, at interview, a strong understanding of the fundamentals of your discipline.

Please note: even if you don't have exactly the background indicated, do contact us now if this type of job is of interest - we may well have similar opportunities that you would be suited to. And of course, we always get your permission before submitting your CV to a company.
