Applying science and engineering to commercial invention

Based in Cambridge, London or remote working, this collaborative group of scientists and engineers work for major product companies to develop patentable product ideas. They develop IP, not physical products – that’s left to their clients – and offer “invention as a service”.

You will have:

  • A love of technology, even in everyday gadgets. You have intellectual curiosity, and likely have taken things apart. You have spare time engineering/science projects which your CV talks about.
  • A good education, broadly studying engineering, applied physics, electronics and/or product-focused sciences to bachelor's or PhD level.
  • A sound, intuitive grasp of the fundamentals of electronics (which may come from physics). You have an appreciation of commercial applications through your projects or internships.
  • A liking for communication with technical people. You can judge when the listener wants a high-level overview, and when they want to start talking in technical detail.

You will be keen to apply these qualities to the collaborative creation of new, patentable inventions. With practice you'll be able to identify the "inventive step" which makes inventions patentable.

This is a chance for a unique and intellectually rewarding full time role, working with smart colleagues, inventing together. Business travel is likely. If close to Cambridge or London, up to 50% home working each week is possible. From elsewhere in the UK, remote working is possible for the right candidate, though you should expect to travel to visit clients and colleagues from time to time.
