Strong academic qualifications are needed for this position; you must hold at a good degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar from a well-ranked world-class university (together with strong A level grades). You will have a robust theoretical knowledge of mechanical engineering principles as well as a creative and experimental side in order to realise your designs.
You will either have some commercial experience where you can demonstrate your ability to create elegant mechanical solutions to problems, primarily in small high-precision products, or be a recent graduate with relevant internships and personal projects to show your innate love of engineering.
