An engaging client-facing role needs an excellent grasp of fundamental Physics

A growing, Cambridge based, maths modelling company has an opportunity for an outgoing physicist or electronics engineer, willing to take on responsibility in an important sales support role.

The company provides mathematical modelling software to both academic and industrial clients. This position would involve providing technical advice to the sales team at both pre- and post-sales stages; providing support and explanation to customers by email, by phone and in person, and conducting training courses. There would also be an element of travel throughout the UK and Ireland, once the Covid restrictions have been lifted.

Our client ideally seeks a PhD level engineer, although Masters level candidates with some commercial experience would be considered. An excellent background in physics or electronics, with a good broad knowledge of optics, lasers, electromagnetics and materials will be needed. A strong grasp of the fundamentals of the theory underpinning the topics mentioned below will be very important as this role will involve acting as a consultant for a wide range of clients in many different technical sectors. Suitable candidates will have a background in one or more of the following applications: antenna design, microwave electromagnetics and cavities, photonics, waveguides, plasmonics, laser-matter interaction, geometrical optics (ray tracing).

You must have great communication skills as a lot of your time will be spent talking to clients in order to understand their needs, and effectively advising them on the best software package for them.

The following skills and experience are required to be successful in this post:

  • A technical PhD from a good university, combined with a Physics or Electronics degree.
  • Excellent communication skills and a desire to work with people.
  • A thorough grasp of fundamental Physics and the ability to move quickly between topics.
  • Some experience with maths modelling packages and software development would be useful but is not essential.

At present, the role would involve working from home, but once the current Covid restrictions have been lifted, the position would be based in the Cambridge office and would involve frequent travel throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Full permission to live and work in the UK without time limit, restriction or sponsorship will also be required. Candidates from the EU must have already been granted Settled or Pre-Settled Status at this time.
