Building innovative instruments for biotech and medical applications

A hands-on Optics Physicist is wanted to join this growing scientific start-up to work on new technologies for biotech and drug discovery applications. The projects are multidisciplinary and the Optics Physicist would work closely with other scientists, engineers and software developers.

A key project is the development and build of a novel instrument based on optical sensors and microfluidics. The Optics Physicist would take a leading role in developing the optical components including alignments, testing and breadboarding of electronics.

Requirements:

  • 1st / 2.1 in Physics or Electronics from a top ranked university, followed by a PhD in Physics.
  • Demonstrable project experience working on optics development within an instrument (such as a microscope, flow cytometer etc...).
  • Experience or exposure to microcontrollers and electronics.

Good communication skills are expected as work will involve different disciplines, and being able to convey and understand technical information is important. The position is open to soon-to-graduate PhDs (must be writing up and expecting to finish shortly), postdocs or PhDs working in industry. Preference is for applicants who can work in the UK without restriction, but strong applications requiring company sponsorship will be considered.
