Technology based product development for multidisciplinary projects

Physicists are great problem-solvers. Our client employs physicists to work alongside their engineers, life scientists and software developers to develop applied technology used in synthetic biological materials, to next-generation life-saving medical devices. Their focus is to apply their expertise and turn research into viable products and technology.

Their teams are collaborative, and work closely with each other as well as external stakeholders, hence excellent communication skills are required. Work will be mostly on the development side of R&D (if you want to do research, this isn’t the role for you), and would consist of concept generation, modelling / simulations, experiments and prototyping as well as devising relevant test frameworks. They transition academic ideas into commercial technology.

Requirements:

  • Academic achievement is important – as well as having a 1st / high 2.1 degree in physics from a top ranked university, you will previously scored A* grades in maths and physics at A-level (or equivalent). You will have (or soon have) a PhD in applied physics or have gained equivalent industry experience.
  • Demonstrable project experience - through industry work or your PhD / postdoc, you will have experience with synthetic biology technology or life science related instrumentation development (note the onus on building new products and tools rather than the research side).
  • Building test rigs or developed prototypes - you have proven experience with these and may have worked with mechanical, electronic or software engineers to help you put together your project.
  • Communications – you will be comfortable presenting your work to a technical audience and be able to converse with a range of stakeholders.

This role would be based in their offices and labs, with some home working possible when projects allow. On offer is an excellent remunerations package, as well as projects that will engage you intellectually and a career path that allows you to develop a range of skills and experiences.
